Pride: Be Loud, Be Proud, Be You
Burju Perez
Be too much and be unmissable.
Born from rebellion.
Pride Month started with the Stonewall Riots in 1969 - a rebellion led by queer and trans people in New York who fought back against police violence and systemic oppression. It wasn't a parade. It was resistance.
When they try to silence us, we get lougder.
Today with governments rolling back protecitons, silencing voices, and ignoring queer lives, Pride is still a fight - and we won't back down. At Burju, we believe fashion can be protest. Every heel, every step, every look can speak volumes.
Show up and show off!
Celebrating Pride means taking action. Here is how you can really make a difference:
Donate
to organizations that are doing the work. Trevor Project and Trans Lifeline are two of many.
Correct
the ignorance. Whether it's your boss or your uncle - speak up!
Show up IRL
Attend your city's Pride march or rally. Not just to celebrate - but to stand up and be counted.
Support safe spaces
The right space changes everything. For LGBTQ+ dancers, it's not just about nailing choreography - it's about safey, self-expression, and belonging. A studio where you don't have to shrink yourself. A rhythm you can actually breath in. A room full of people who see you. We believe those spaces should exist everywhere - and they deserve to be seen. Some of these communities are:
Queerchata - Salsa and Bachata, but make it queer. A dance class where joy, identity, and community take center stage.
Mirrors Dance - Creating space where LGBTQ+ dancers feel seen, heard, and free to move how they want - no filters, no fear.
Rain Country Dance Association - Seattle's nonprofit LGBYQ+ country western dance group. They're all about connection, movement, and pride in every step.
Fusion Experience - Queer Afro-Latin Dance social where humans can experience a fusion of arts, dance and connect beyond movement.
When June ends Pride doesn't
Keep that energy burning all year long! At Burju, we believe Pride is a daily act: of courage, of joy, of being unapologetically you. So wear what makes you feel seen. Dance like the world's watching. And keep showing up in your truth - today, tomorrow, always.
