Caring for your designer stockings
It isn’t every day or every class that you will use your designer tights, and so in the spirit of helping our fellow dancers out by imparting some of our knowledge, here are a few handy tips that will help you get the best out of what you have.
- Hygiene is so important when you are a dancer. Sweat can build up in fabric and where it is not cleaned this can lead to bad odors. Nobody wants the embarrassment of realizing that you’re the one everybody is turning his or her nose away from. So, after each class don’t stay in those sweaty tights. Instead, it’s best to either hand wash, or machine wash them in cold water and with a detergent that is not very harsh. We believe it’s best to air-dry.
- Tights are delicate and prone to tearing, however, if you’ve just spotted a hole in yours and want to prevent it from running, then dab a little clear nail polish on it and that will help glue the fabric.
- When your tights are at the end of their life they can still be useful. Some dancers even use them to polish up their shoes, so have a little think about what else they might be used for before you bin them.
