How to crush your next video call

One thing the lockdown has taught us:
it’s not easy looking good on a webcam - especially from home. Whether you need to impress on your next conference call, or you want to look your best for an online date, today’s email is for you.

We’re going to give you some of our best tips for looking gorgeous on your next video call. Yasss! Let’s dive in...

Lighting

Lighting is one of the major reasons people say they look bad on camera, so spend some time before your call playing around with different lights and positions. The best thing to do is have a light that brightens your face, shining from directly in front of you if possible.

Background

The last thing you want is a distracting background or (if you’re on a work call) one that’s a little too personal, like your bedroom. So pick something as plain as possible. Remember if your background includes a door you risk people walking in while you’re on camera, so choose an area where you won’t be interrupted.

Background

This is a big one. If the camera is lower than your face, you risk looking like you have a double chin (eek!). The best angle is to have it at eye level wherever possible, directly in front of you, so that your head and shoulders are visible.

Eye contact

It’s super tempting on a video call to take a sneaky peak of yourself in the corner of the screen. Even if you happen to be looking gorgeous, don’t do it! You’ll break eye contact with the person you’re talking to and if they realise you’re looking at yourself, you’ll seem a little vain. Try to concentrate on the face in front of you and you’ll appear much more natural.

Dress to impress

Just because you’re at home, doesn’t mean you have to look super casual. It’s worth making the effort for a video call, especially in situations like job interviews. Choose something simple and smart, and avoid loud patterns which can be distracting. Remember: you only have to dress from the waist up, but if you have to get up during the call make sure nobody sees your PJs.

For an extra confidence boost, you could always slip on those beautiful Burjus and feel like a queen!
